Which city within Italy would be the best to be in to go to the Italian Alps?

Many choices, it depends what you're looking for: skiing, wherever, for biking Alto Adige is renowned; lakes: Arona, Stresa, Como; also, do you want to stay *on* the Alps or just close? And are you looking for a big city? There are a lot of smaller city or towns close to the mountains with all the comfort needed and more quietness: an example can be Varallo Sesia and close towns (countryside), from where you can reach Monte Rosa area, the second highest mount in Europe, in no more than 1/2 hour, and from there you can also reach Val D'Aosta by cableway.

I want a great mountain adventure. I don't want to set up camp in an area that is not completely surrounded by mountains. I don't want to camp in the valleys.

Any advice as to a good place to buy a ski appartment in the French Alps?

My partner and I are looking to buy a ski appartment in the French Alps which sleeps 4 to 6 people (2 bedrooms). It needs to be somewhere which can provide a winter and a summer income, so summer activities are important. Ideally we'll be able to ski directly back to the village/town from higher slopes. We'd like to spend no more than 300,000 Euros. Thanks.

The beauty of this area, is that it is a family friendly ski area with skiing to the back door, but with larger ski resorts (Chatel, Avoriaz, Les Gets, Morzine etc) all within easy reach. Additionally, there is genuine summer letting income as all lakeside activities are in easy reach. It should be an area of interest and you would pick up a really nice chalet property with your budget.
